Running PopChart Server as a Service

On Windows NT/2000/XP and Mac OS X systems, you can install PopChart Server as a service. This means that PopChart Server will run automatically in the background whenever your computer is on, even if you are not logged in.

To install PopChart Server as a service, you should choose the Production install set during the installation process, PopChart Server will automatically be installed as a service. However, you can also install it as a service manually if you did not choose the Production install set.

Windows Notes

Before PopChart Server will run as a service, you will need to either restart the computer or manually start the service. You can manually start the service by launching Administrative Tools > Services, right-clicking on the PopChartServer service, and selecting Start.

Note: If the PopChartServer service is not listed, you probably did not have Administrative privileges when you installed PopChart Server. Uninstall PopChart Server, log in as an Administrator, and install PopChart Server again.

To install PopChart Server as a service if you did not choose the Production install set

You can still run PopChart Server as a service even if you did not choose the Production install set. Follow these steps to do so.

1. Log in as Administrator or as a user with Administrative privileges.

2. Locate and run the bin/installService.bat file.

3. Restart your computer (or manually start the service using the procedure outlined at the top of this page).

To Uninstall the Service Without Uninstalling PopChart Server

1. 1. Run the bin/removeService.bat file.

Mac OS X Notes

You do not need to restart your computer before the service will be installed.

Currently, because of a bug in Mac OS X, the PopChart service will stop if the user logs out. Also, if you request a GIF or PNG while PopChart Server is running as a service, a generic Java icon will appear in the dock. Closing this icon will kill PopChart Server. Again, this is a bug in Mac OS X, not PopChart Server. AppleŽ is aware of these bugs.
