Once you have installed PopChart Server, all you will need to do to start it is locate the PopChart Server shortcut (on Windows, for example, it's at Start > Programs > PopChart 4.0) and run it.
Note: If you chose not to install the shortcuts, you will need to locate the PopChartServer executable in the bin folder and run it manually. On Windows and Mac OS X, this can be done by double-clicking its icon. On Linux compatible systems, you may need to open a command prompt, change to the directory, and type sh PopChartServer.bin.
When you start PopChart Server, you should see the following splash screen on Windows. (On UNIX and Mac OS X compatible systems you will see nothing)
After a few seconds the splash screen disappears. If everything started correctly, nothing more will happen. Otherwise, you will receive an error message and PopChart Server will shut down.
If you receive an error message, you should write it down and look it up in Chapter 14, "Troubleshooting PopChart Server."
If you want to make sure that PopChart Server started correctly you can always "ping" it by loading the following address in your web browser:
Note: If you have changed the port number from 2001, you should replace 2001 with the appropriate port number. Similarly, if you are trying to connect to PopChart Server from a different machine, you should replace localhost with the name of the machine running PopChart Server.
If PopChart Server is installed correctly, you should get a page similar to the one below.
If you do not get this page, PopChart Server was either not started, or did not start properly. Try starting PopChart Server again, and if the error persists, refer to Chapter 14, "Troubleshooting PopChart Server," for advice.
