Appearance files are essentially templates for the PopChart images that PopChart Server generates. They can be created with PopChart Builder, or, if you're really adventurous, you can create them yourself in XML.
Appearance files should be kept in PopChart Server's document root, which is usually the chart_root directory. Although they can be stored in any folder within the document root, this documentation usually places them in the apfiles directory.
By default, PopChart Builder will save any appearance files that you create to the chart_root/apfiles directory. This means that unless you change the save location, you do not have to install the appearance files if you are using PopChart Builder on the same machine that PopChart Server runs on.
If you are running PopChart Builder on a different machine, the simplest way to install an appearance file is probably just to copy it directly to the appropriate folder on the machine that runs PopChart Server. However, this may not always be possible.
1. Login to the Administration Console.
If you do not know how to do this, refer to "Using the Administration Console" on page 3-2.
2. Using the menu on the left, go to the Files > Upload Appearance Files screen.
3. In the Destination Directory text box, enter the location (path only) that you would like to save the appearance file to.
This location is relative to the document root. For example, entering apfiles would upload the appearance file to the apfiles directory. Leaving this box blank will upload the file to the document root.
Currently, you can only upload to a directory under the document root (i.e. you can't move up a directory by using .. in the file name).
Note: In order to upload an appearance file, the subdirectory to which you are uploading must already exist.
4. In the File to Upload box, enter the appearance file that you want to upload. Alternatively, you can click the Browse button to locate this file.
The path to this file will be relative to your local machine.
5. Click Upload to install the file.
Note: Appearance files should always have a .pcxml extension. If you are using an appearance file from PopChart 3.x, this is not a requirement.
You may also find it useful to see what appearance files are already on PopChart Server.
1. Login to the Administration Console.
If you do not know how to do this, refer to "Using the Administration Console" on page 3-2.
2. Using the menu on the left, go to the Files > List Appearance Files screen.
The list on this page displays all appearance files in the directory specified at the top of the page. This directory is relative to the document root directory. When you first enter this screen, you will be shown the apfiles subdirectory.
3. If you need to view the appearance files in a subfolder of the document root directory, enter the subfolder name in the Change Directory box and click Apply.
If you need to browse up to the document root, you can enter .. to browse up a level.
