Choosing a Java Virtual Machine

Note: Mac OS X does not give the option of selecting a Java VM, so you will not see this screen on that operating system.

Since PopChart Server is a pure Java application, it requires a Java VM (Virtual Machine) to run.

If you do not know anything about Java Virtual Machines, or do not have a Java VM installed on your machine, you should probably stick to the default selection of Install a Java VM specifically for this application. This will install a bundled Java VM to the jre folder of your PopChart root directory.

Note: Installing the bundled Java VM will add 15-20 MB to your install size.

If you have a Java VM already on your computer, you can use that instead. The PopChart installer will search your computer for existing Java Virtual Machines. You can select a VM from this list to run PopChart Server. If the PopChart installer does not find your VM, you can search for it again by clicking on the Search for Others button, or you can try to locate it yourself by clicking on the Choose Another button.

Warning: To use PopChart Builder, you must select a Java VM compatible with JRE 1.3 or higher. The PopChart installer is not able to distinguish between Java VM versions, so it may list a non-compatible VM. Make sure that the VM you select is compatible with PopChart Server.

Warning: We currently do not support Java VM version 1.4. You may still be able to get it working, though (see "Unable to Run PopChart Server with Java 1.4 VM on Windows" in Chapter 14 and "Can't Generate GIF Images with JVM 1.4" in Chapter 14).

Once you have selected the Java VM, click Next to continue.
